AFTER EFFECTS

To develop my skills in After Effects I used a 20 second audio of the Sales speech from The Wolf of Wall Street. It was harder than I had anticipated to match the audio words with text. As the task specified only to use pure type I experimented with different fonts before deciding on American Typewriter as I thought it had the most relevance to the subject of the speech. When possible I tried to use effects that demonstrated the function of the word for example ‘Harpoon’ I used a 3D x-axis to tilt and position to have it shooting across the screen like I imagine a harpoon to do. When playing around with different compositions for the words I also took into consideration the emphasis made on the words by Leonardo DiCaprio so the type emphasises the same words such as ‘1%’, I did this by increasing the scale.  

I plan on experimenting further with After Effects so I can improve my knowledge of the programme, this will hopefully help with simple navigation around the site so when creating a new project I will be a lot quicker with basic effects.

PHOTOSHOP – ANIMATION

My initial idea when I was first introduced to Gif, was to draw out a rolling dice. However it was harder than anticipated to map out the correct sequence of the dots as they rotated and to get the correct spacing between dots. To make it easier I still used the cube shape but just lightly rendered one of the sides, so it was  still clear how the cube rolled across the page. I used a ruler to draw out the cubes then went over it with a fine liner so the lines were more solid when I scanned them onto the computer.

The outcome did have the desired affect, however the outline isn’t as clear as it is in the still images, if I were to do it again I would see if I could increase the thickness of the outline on the computer, to get a clearer image on the inserted Gif below. I was confused by the sudden lack in quality of my drawings but I then learnt the difference between the colours in a Photoshop still image that can be saves as a JPEG compared to a Gif. Photoshop still images have 255 for each RGB plus transparency, therefore the quality and clarity of the image is high. A Gif on the other hand has no transparency and a combined RGB of 255, so the quality of the images are drastically reduced.

Before drawing out the cubes I did some background research into a Praxiniscope. I learnt how they use different frames of still images to create what appears to be a moving cycle that can keep on repeating.  If I were to put the sequence on repeat it would appear as though the cubes never stopped rolling, like on a Praxiniscope.

In addition I looked at some tutorials on Cinemagraphs, using the theme of waves to fit in with inspiration of a cycle. I used photographs I had taken on Bournemouth beach. I took a series of 12 photos on the same stretch go beach, by using the method of making a Gif on Photoshop and using the mask tool I was able to control what part of the image moved. I selected one of the photos with a distinctive cloud pattern lined all the images up, then used the mask took on each layer and a black bruch to rub out the sky. So the only moving part of the photos was the cycle of the waves.

If I were to repeat it, I would have used a faster shutter speed so there was less of a difference in the stage of cycle of the waves, this would have made the cycle look a lot smoother/seamless. I would have also maintained the same foreground, so the only movement would be focused in the centre of the image. I think this would have made the cinemagraph more subtle, which was the desired affect, to make the images less jumpy creates a more surreal experience.

Cinemagraph – Waves


Whilst doing some further research into Disney and the background of animation I decided to create my own version of a disney animation using sprite sheets from the internet. I decide to use the Lion King, so I found sprite sheets of Simba running. After I had samba running across the screen I decided to add in a suitable background that was visible thorough all the layers. Then I found sprite sheets for Tomone and Pumba. When I began putting in all these extra the layers began hard to keep track of so I grouped them dependant on who they affected in the animation, this made it easier for me to navigate around the images.

Disney Lion King – Giff


For my Stop-Motion animation I used a cycle that I repeat several times a week. I set up my iPhone on some books so it stayed at the same height and same angle, I then sat on my bed and as I put on my pointe shoes I got my flat mate to keep taking pictures. I inserted all the images onto Photoshop as layers, I created an animation as a Gif. I set the timer to 0.1 second per frame for all the images. I went through and deleted some of the images that were identical so there was no apparent pauses. I really like the affect of a stop motion animation, as you can see they are stills even though they appear as a motion. The ending  however could have had more frames as it seems to jump, this shows were stop motion looses its effectiveness.

TEMPORAL EXPRESSIONS

Joiner: 

I went to the Bournemouth beach so I could capture the cycle of the sea. I used inspiration from Hockney to use a combination of photos that I took of the same stretch of the beach too create a joiner. The cycle of the waves in constant repetition, created ever changing ways in which the waves crashed. The way the light reflected off the surface of the water at different stages of the cycle created really interesting changing shapes/forms of the photos. On the peak/curve of the wave the water reflected white light however the more shallow the water got over the sand the clearer the reflection of the sky. This meant that the blue tones of the sky also came in on the sand which has a really interesting affect.

The broken up and stitched together images inspirited by Hockney created a fascinating abstract image. As the scene was constantly moving, I used images of the waves at different stages in the cycle. It makes the complete image look more abstract but I really like the overall affect of the mixed up refections in the sand and the changing blues in the sky. I experimented with several different compositions of the waves however it was hard to make the broken up image look good when there was such a different in the cycles so, as much as possible I tried to match/line up the waves so the cycle of the waves was clear, as that was the intended subject of the image.

Slow shutter speed:

These images were taken at night on a main road leading into Bournemouth. The low light with high exposure create a blurred drag of the bright headlights of the cars. The slow shutter speed means the camera captured the light over an extended period of time, producing the streaking light effect. The monochrome images means that the focus is on the light and dark rather than any vibrant colours. The linear drag of the headlights surrounded by dark shape of the road, creates a line for the viewer to follow through the image.  DSC_0159 2 DSC_0165 2 DSC_0166 2 DSC_0184 2


 Fast shutter speed:

On a particularly windy day on Bournemouth beach I was amazed by the way in which sand got dragged across the beach. The fast pace movement of the sand required me to use a fast shutter speed with high exposure to capture the fast moving sand as a still image. The linear streaks of sand that changed with the direction of the wind created ever-changing forms in the sand for me to capture.

For the the images below I edited them in Adobe Bridge – Camera Raw. I increase the contrast so there is a clearer definition between the dark wet sand and the light thin layer that moves above it. By increasing the white colour as well it meant that the moving sand was highlighted so the changing forms created by the wind were clearer.

PHOTOSHOP

Development of my skills in photoshop: I used the mask tool with a black brush to control where you could apply the different effects to one image such as contrast, curve, saturation and hues. As the image is white using a black brush effectively rubs out the mask you created so the unchanged image behind it can come through.

I particularly like the changes made to this image as I was able to apply a monochrome saturation to the sky, this created a really interesting contrast with the red/brown hues of the road. Being able to create a divide like this highlights the difference between the two halves of the photo, road and sky. However the white lines on the road (unaffected by the hue setting on the road) that aren’t tinted red/brown  forms a line for the eye to follow into the centre of the image where the road meets the sky, the white lines extend into the greyscale sky.

This image has the same original/base as the one above however I used red/orange hues across the whole image. The increased contrast and saturation of the sky bring out the dark reds which adds to the dark stormy sky in the foreground. I didn’t apply the increased contrast to the centre of the image, I just added more blue hues where the road meets the sky I think this helped provide a lightened focus point.

In this image I used the opposite to the one above I lowered the saturation of the road so it was monochrome and increased saturation and blue hues of the sky. This highlighted the man made concrete structure of the road compared to the deep blues of the natural sky.

As an extension from the previous task I got together some photos that I took whilst on a trip home to London. I went through waterloo station so I took the opportunity to capture it with crowded people under amazing architecture, the monochrome adds to the theme of man made structure inhibited with large and busy population.

The tube train also in greyscale with slightly blurred edge of the picture to the right shows the movement of the train through an empty station. The blurred train surrounded by still, empty, white platform creates a interesting contrast.


Autumn at Bournemouth beach, allowed me to capture landscape of the sea and sky with my wide lens SLR Nikon digital camera.

The series of 3 photos below of a child playing in the sea, show the dark silhouette of the child against the harsh white of the sun reflecting on the waters surface. A really clear outline of the child can be seen and therefore a dark, intricate, small shape amongst the mass of soft blues/greys and whites,  shows off the clear subject of the photo.
